Autumn Block Calving: Setting Your Herd Up for Success

Autumn Block Calving: Setting Your Herd Up for Success

For some dairy farmers, autumn block calving is the system of choice, concentrating calvings into a tight window from late summer through to early winter, so cows hit peak yield just as they move onto full winter rations. Done well, it’s an efficient, well-organised way to run a herd. Done without the right preparation, it can pile pressure onto cows and staff alike at the busiest time of year.

With calving fast approaching for many autumn block herds, now’s the time to make sure nutrition is prepared, from dry cow management through to those crucial first few weeks in milk.

Why Autumn Block Calving?

Autumn block calving suits systems built around housed winter feeding, where farmers want full control over the diet during peak lactation.

The tighter the block, the more efficient the system can be: simplified grouping, streamlined feeding, and a more predictable workload. But it also means more cows going through dry-off, transition, and calving in a short space of time, which makes getting the nutrition right at each stage even more important.

Getting the Dry Period Right

The dry period is where next lactation’s performance is won or lost. Key priorities during this stage include:

  • Body condition management – cows should go dry at the right condition score and neither gain nor lose significant condition through the dry period. Over-conditioned cows are at greater risk of metabolic problems at calving.
  • Mineral supplementation – getting calcium, magnesium, and trace element status right in late pregnancy is critical for reducing the risk of milk fever, retained cleansings, and other transition disorders. A properly balanced dry cow mineral, tailored to forage analysis, makes a real difference here.
  • Forage quality – dry cow diets should provide adequate but not excessive energy, with fibre levels that support rumen function without affecting body condition.

Nailing the Transition Period

The three weeks either side of calving are when cows are at their most metabolically vulnerable. Maintaining intakes before calving, and getting them back up quickly afterwards, reduces the risk of issues like ketosis, displaced abomasums, and poor fertility performance down the line.

A well-formulated close-up dry cow diet, followed by a smooth step-up onto the milking ration, helps rumen microbes adjust ahead of the increased demands of early lactation – reducing the dip in intakes that often occurs at calving.

Managing the Calving Block Itself

With a tight calving period, workload management matters just as much as nutrition. A few things worth planning for:

  • Adequate calving space and hygiene, given the volume of calvings in a short window
  • Colostrum management protocols that can be followed consistently under pressure
  • Nutrition planned to meet requirements at the different stages
  • Staff availability and rotas planned around the expected peak of the block

Talk to the Team

Every autumn block system is different, shaped by forage quality, herd genetics, and calving spread. The team at Dugdale Nutrition can help review your dry cow and transition strategy ahead of the block, making sure cows go into calving in the best possible shape – and come out the other side milking well and back in calf on time.
