On Tuesday, two of our Raw Material Coordinators visited the Wissington Sugar Factory in King's Lynn.
The Wissington sugar factory is the largest and most cost effective sugar processing site in Europe. It is located in Wissington, Norfolk, UK. The factory was built in 1925 and has been in operation ever since. It processes over 1 million tonnes of sugar beet each year and produces over 200,000 tonnes of sugar.
The factory is also home to the UK's first bioethanol plant, which produces ethanol from sugar beet. The plant has a capacity of 64,000 tonnes of bioethanol per year.
Our raw material coordinators, Emma and Susan were given a full access tour of the factory and were able to see the whole process, from the delivery from locally sourced farms to the beet being washed and processed then taken and made into granulated sugar.
The excess from the granulated sugar is then taken and delivered out to us as a raw material for us to put into our products. We take the sugar beet and mix it with other raw materials to create the very best products for farmers to feed their cattle.
We would like to say a massive thank you to the people at Wissington Sugar Factory & AB Agri for their time and hospitality.
